Where is Page, Arizona Located?

Nestled in northern Arizona, just south of the Utah border, Page is a small town with big adventures. It’s the perfect pit stop for families exploring the Southwest, conveniently located near iconic landmarks like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Utah’s Mighty Five national parks. But unlike some crowded tourist spots, Page offers a more relaxed atmosphere without skimping on breathtaking sights.

Our Top Family-Friendly Adventures in Page

We spent four days in Page, and even then, we couldn’t check everything off our list! Here’s a glimpse into some of the top things we did during our visit and others we’re saving for our next trip.

Witnessing the Wonder of Horseshoe Bend

About Horseshoe Bend

One of the most iconic sights near Page is Horseshoe Bend. Horseshoe Bend is a stunning meander of the Colorado River in a dramatic 270-degree turn. Over millions of years, the river has carved a deep, horseshoe-shaped canyon through the Navajo sandstone, creating one of the most photographed sites in the Southwest. It’s best known for its breathtaking panoramic views from a 1,000-foot cliff overlooking the river below.

Our Adventure to Horseshoe Bend

We decided to visit Horseshoe Bend at sunset to capture that perfect golden-hour glow but arrived just as the sun was setting behind the mesa. The hike was an easy 1.5-mile round trip, and the trail was well-maintained with gravel. Our kids led the way, excited to see if the bend really looked like a horseshoe.

As we approached the overlook, the view was breathtaking. The sun was setting behind the bend casting a cool, blue light over the canyon, and the river below shimmered. It was busier than we expected, but there was plenty of room for everyone to soak in the view.

Our middle child pointed out a tiny glow near the river. “Look! Is that a campfire down there?” Sure enough, kayakers were setting up camp along the riverbank. It sparked a fun conversation about river adventures and maybe trying kayaking when the kids are older.

Before heading back, we snapped a few photos and took a moment to just enjoy the scenery as a family. The gentle uphill walk back to the parking lot was a bit of a climb, but the kids kept us entertained with stories and laughter.

What You Should Know Before You Go:

  • Entry Fee: $10 per vehicle (no state or federal passes accepted).

Family Tips:

  • Safety First: While the overlook has railings, there are open areas without barriers. Keep a close eye on little ones.

  • Facilities: Public restrooms are available on-site.

  • Best Time to Visit: For the most spectacular photos, visit between golden hour and sunset. Heads up! You may encounter larger crowds during these times as well.

Discovering the Hidden Shell Sand Cave

About the Shell Sand Cave

Adventure often finds you in the most unexpected places. Who would have thought that behind a simple Shell gas station lies a hidden alcove waiting to be explored? The Shell sand cave is a great little walk to a hidden “cave.” We honestly didn’t know if we had gotten to the right spot, but we found it! We got some great pictures right at the end of the golden hour.

Our Family Adventure to the Shell Sand Cave

Armed with only a vague idea of its location, we set out to find this elusive cave. “Are we sure this is the right place?” Andy, my husband, asked as we parked near the gas station. Unsure if we were in the right place, we followed a short, uphill trail through deep sand and were delighted to find this secluded spot.

When we reached the “cave,” which is more of an alcove, we were greeted with beautiful sandstone walls glowing in the late afternoon sun. The kids enjoyed exploring the alcove since we practically had the place to ourselves. We captured some amazing family photos that will definitely make it into our vacation album.

What You Should Know Before You Go:

  • Trail Conditions: The walk is short but involves an uphill trek through deep sand.

  • What to Expect: It’s an alcove that feels like a cave—great for photos and exploring.

  • Best Time to Visit: Before sunset to catch the best lighting.

  • No Heavy Gear Needed: We left our hiking carrier and backpacks at the RV.

Family Tips:

  • Not Crowded: This spot is off the beaten path, so you’ll likely have it all to yourselves.
